The shape of an object is an important characterizing feature. Shape provides the basis of efficient mechanisms for detection, tracking, clustering, classification, and recognition of objects.

Applications of shape analysis are found in many different areas. In computer vision, the shapes of object boundaries in images play an important role in understanding imaged scenes. In medical image analysis, shape analysis of anatomical parts is important in the diagnosis of many diseases. In structural biology, the shapes of proteins are highly correlated to their functionality. The shapes of handwritten or printed characters provide the primary means of their identification. In human biometrics, methods for recognition of human subjects using their fingerprints, face scans, or gait videos all rely in some way on shape analysis.
